Strategy vs Tactic

I asked Copilot about the title of this post

Ah, the classic conundrum of strategy versus tactics!

- **Strategy** is the grand master plan, the overarching vision that guides long-term goals. It's about setting the direction and making big-picture decisions. Think of it as the "what" and the "why."

- **Tactics** are the specific actions and steps taken to implement the strategy. They are more about the "how" and the "when." Tactics are the means to achieve the strategic goals.

In a nutshell, strategy sets the destination, and tactics are the route you take to get there.

For example:
- In a business context, a company's strategy might be to become the market leader in eco-friendly products. The tactics to achieve this could include launching a new product line, increasing marketing efforts, and forging partnerships with sustainable suppliers.

- In a game of chess, your strategy might be to control the center of the board, while your tactics would involve the individual moves and maneuvers to capture your opponent's pieces and secure the center.

ChatGPT answers

The main difference between **strategy** and **tactic** lies in their scope and purpose:

- **Strategy** is the **big picture plan** that defines long-term goals and overall direction. It answers **"What do we want to achieve?"**
- **Tactic** is a **specific action** or method used to implement the strategy. It answers **"How will we achieve it?"**

### Example in Business:
- **Strategy:** Expand into Southeast Asian markets within five years.
- **Tactics:** Launch a localized ad campaign, partner with regional distributors, and offer country-specific promotions.

### Example in War:
- **Strategy:** Win the war by cutting off enemy supply lines.
- **Tactics:** Use guerrilla warfare, sabotage bridges, and intercept supply convoys.

### Key Differences:
| Aspect       | Strategy  | Tactic  |
|-------------|-----------|---------|
| **Scope**   | Broad, long-term | Narrow, short-term |
| **Focus**   | Goals & vision | Execution & actions |
| **Timeframe** | Long-term (months/years) | Short-term (days/weeks) |
| **Flexibility** | Stable but adjustable | Highly adaptable |

A good strategy **guides** tactics, and effective tactics **support** the strategy.

My Take On AI ChatGPT

ChatGPT brought AI into mainstream culture. Let's face it, everyone now has their 2 cents about AI nowadays. My favorite AI joke since ChatGPT came to the front is that it heralds the birth of SKYNET. :) (if you don't get it, you're really young).

I liked the WSJ  interview of Satya Nadella, when it was announced that Microsoft made 10 billion investment in OpenAI, ChatGPT parents. He is enthused about the various potential of AI, and how they will integrate it in Bing, their search engine. You can see the gleam in his eye, when he talks about how the AI-powered Bing search could challenge Google.

I have used the ChatGPT and it has been interesting journey. One thing though, keep in mind that it is a tool. And you, as a user, need to still moderate/assess the results, instead of blindly using it. I would say that, as it is, it is a damn good suggestive tool, to help you to find what you are looking for.

I like MKBHD take of ChatGPT, as it mirrors mine. In summary, he is cautioning against too much reliance on it, as it can make mistakes as well.

In the end, ChatGPT signals the emergence of Generative AI,  the video below is a good description of it.

a bit long at 21 mins but worth watching

Yep, AI is here.
